The return to business and the new normality in the state of Quintana Roo has taken place gradually, in keeping with the evolution of the epidemiological traffic light in different parts of the state. The alert level in the southern part of the state was recently changed back to red, so tourism at present remains at one of the lowest levels of occupancy in hotels, parks and attractions. As indicated by health authorities, such facilities are currently only allowed to operate at between 10 and 30% of their full capacity.
The main tourism centers are Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres, where a 60% increase in tourism levels is forecast by the end of the year. Likewise, in the coming months the hotel sector is expected to reopen gradually, but at the moment only 66 hotels are officially open throughout the state.
Although public beaches remain closed to the public in general, activities such as snorkeling, diving, and use of boardwalks are now allowed once again, but in very limited numbers and following appropriate hygiene measures.
It should be noted that summer is one of the highest seasons in the Riviera Maya, so reactivating the economy in the tourism sector is a priority, given that it is one of Mexico’s leading markets.
