Starting in 2021, the construction of a new airport will begin in one of the places with the highest tourism levels in the Mexican Caribbean; it is expected to open in 2023 in conjunction with the Mayan Train, which will link up much of the Yucatán peninsula.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has stated that the government has two plots of land, one pertaining to the Navy Secretariat, the other to the Communications and Transport Secretariat, covering a total of 1,500 hectares. The airport is scheduled to be built by the army.

The president emphasized that Tulum airport will boost the state of Quintana Roo’s economy, since the Riviera Maya is one of the most visited tourism destinations in Mexico.

Marisol Vanegas, Secretary of Tourism in Quintana Roo, commented that it is “good news, but we must await further information”, regarding the location of the new terminal for instance, since it has not been confirmed whether it will be built in the same area planned a few years ago, where land was expropriated by the state government for that purpose.
